PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording medium drive and a head slider that can surely prevent the head element from colliding with projections on the medium. SOLUTION: A protective film 25 is provided on the air flow outlet side of a slider 23. A head element 24 is embedded in the protective film 25. The protective film 25 expands by heat, when the head element 24 is heated, depending on the supply current. The tip of the head element 24 is made to approach the recording medium 13, closer than to the facing surface 36a of the medium. Floating height Hp of the protective projection 49 is set smaller than floating height Hw of the head element 24, when it expands due to heat. The protective prong 49 flies in the orbit 66, which is closer to the recording medium 13 that to the orbit 65 of the head element, when the protective film 25 expands. Even if there are some obstacles, like projections or contaminations on the recording medium 13, the protective prong 49 can collide with obstacles located in front of the head element 24.
