PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To precisely recognize a specified pattern with simple constitution. SOLUTION: In image processing, input multi-valued image data are binarized, a pattern similar to the specified pattern is detected from the obtained binarized data, and it is decided by pattern matching whether the detected pattern is a pattern in a specified shape. Here, when the center position of the pattern matching for the detected pattern is determined in the pattern matching, an edge part of the detected pattern is detected and a center position is determined based upon the position of the edge part. Then when the determined center position shifts from a pixel position, the center position is moved to a direction where more pixels are distributed nearby the edge part and then determined.
