A multistage process for production of graft modified olefin polymers of functionality 0.1-5 wt.% involves: (i) heating reaction mixture containing olefin polymer, butyl acrylate (BA) and peroxide; (ii) reacting of BA or BA/comonomer mixture; (iii) adding maleic acid anhydride (MAA) or MAA mixture, and heating; (iv) blowing with nitrogen; (v) removing unreacted monomer; and (vi) cooling and removing the product. A multistage process for production of graft modified olefin polymers of functionality 0.1-5 wt.% involving: (i) heating reaction mixture containing (wt.%): particulate olefin polymer or olefin polymer blend (60-97) of mean particle diameter 0.01-8 mm, butyl acrylate (BA)(2-24) or BA/comonomer mixture in weight ratio at least 1 part BA per part comonomer, organic peroxide (1-16) or a mixture of at least two organic peroxides of half life 2-150 minutes at a selected reaction temperature (TR1 and TR2) as radical former, weight ratio of BA or BA/comonomer mixture to radical former 0.2-20, dispersion temperature TD1 between room temperature TN and 60 degreesC, dispersion time 1-150 minutes; (ii) heating the mixture within a time tA1 of 5-200 minutes from the dispersion temperature TD1 to the reaction temperature TR1 of 60-130 degreesC, (iii) reacting BA or the BA/comonomer mixture at TR1 of 60-130 degreesC within a reaction time tR1 of 5-300 minutes with maintenance of a solid (dry) consistency in the reaction mixture, and after a monomer conversion of 50-99% in a second state; (iv) adding maleic acid anhydride (MAA) or MAA/comonomer mixture corresponding to a composition MAA (20-95)/comonomer (5-80) at a temperature in the TR1 region, with dispersion within a time tD2 of 1-150 minutes; (v) after a heating time tA2 of 5-200 minutes, heating to a reaction temperature TR2 of 100-160 degreesC; and (vi) reaction with maintenance of TR2 with the reaction time tR2 of 5-300 minutes and the reaction mixture in the solid (dry) state; (vii) removing unreacted monomer from the reaction mixture which is blown with nitrogen over a desorption time tdes of 20-240 minutes and a desorption temperature TDes between reaction temperature TR2 and 80 degreesC, the residual initiator is deactivated and after cooling to a final temperature between 80 degreesC and room temperature TN the dry graft modified olefin polymer or olefin polymer blend is removed. |
