To produce staple fibers, melt spun filaments (12) are formed into a filament cable (11) and to be wound into rolls (16) and stored in a creel (15). A number of filament cables are drawn from their rolls simultaneously, to be combined into a tow (30). The tow is passed through a fixing station (18), a crimping stage (19) and is then chopped into staple fibers at a cutting unit (20).
