The desired values for the actuator elements are derived using an inverted version of the model tuned with measurement and model values. The method involves determining the actual positions of two actuating elements (8,9) in series in the induction tract (2) and the actual revolution rate of the internal combustion engine (1) and deriving model values for air flow rate (MF) and induction pipe pressure (P) in an invertible model and deriving desired actuator positions from air flow rate and induction pipe pressure desired values. The model is tuned using measurement and model values and the desired values for the two actuator elements are derived using an inverted version of the tuned model.
