A retaining wall (10, 60), supported by a footer (15), foundation or conventional retaining wall, includes a plurality of post-tensioning rods (20, 62) anchored in the underlying support and extending throught the cells of the blocks forming the courses of the wall (10, 60). An elongated or apertured plate (29, 75, 100) or plurality of plates rest upon the next to last course to receive the threaded ends (21) of each rod.(20, 62). Nuts (33, 76) engage the threaded ends (21) of rods. The top course (45, 102) rests upon the plates (29, 75, 100) and may be constructed as a bond beam. To add an extended wall (50, 67, 120, 154) on the bond beam, couplings (124) may be threadedly engaged with the rod ends with further rods (126) engaging the couplings and extending upwardly. Apertured plates (132) rest on a course (156) to receive the further rods (126), and nuts (136) engage the upper ends (128, 134) of the further rods (126).
