<p>PURPOSE: To effectively and efficiently evolve products having complicated shapes by dispensing a material at a controlled rate from a dispensing head to a substrate or base member in a pattern dictated by the shape of an article to be formed, with the article being solidified and adhered to each other to build up the article. CONSTITUTION: The design of an article 40 is inputted to a computer 36 and the article design is sectioned into multiple layers corresponding to the particular shape of each separate layer. A supply material is supplied in the form of a solid rod 46, heated to a fluid state in a dispensing head, and metered at a controlled flow rate onto a receiving surface, such as a sandpaper 108 positioned on the base plate 10. In a horizontal plane along the 'X'-'Y' axes, a first layer is dispensed and solidified as it adheres to the substrate, such as the sandpaper 108. A second and each subsequent layer take slightly different shapes, as dictated by the particular cross section for each layer from the computer program and layering software, and the dispensing head is incrementally raised along the 'Z' axis by a predetermined distance to control the thickness of each layer.</p> |
