Identifying an agent (I) for treating conditions caused by altered expression of the insulin receptor (IR), is new. Identifying an agent (I) for treating conditions caused by altered expression of the insulin receptor (IR) comprises: (a) treating a mammal with a test compound; (b) in vitro analysis of the amounts of the Ex11+ and/or Ex11- splice variants of IR in penile tissue; and (c) selecting compounds that cause an increase in the amount of Ex11+ variant and/or reduction in that of the Ex11- variant. An Independent claim is also included for diagnosing conditions caused by altered expression of the insulin receptor by in vitro analysis of IR splice variants in penile tissue.
