A granular cooking ingredient comprises 8-50 wt.% visual material, 15-35% binding agent and 20-70% pleasant tasting ingredients combined in a compressed form. Also claimed are: (1) the preparation of the cooking ingredient comprising mixing the visual material with the binding agent and the pleasant tasting ingredients, crumbling the mixture and finally chilling or drying the product followed by crumbling either successively or simultaneously; and (2) the apparatus for preparing the cooking ingredient comprising a device for mixing the separate ingredients together, a crumbling device and a chilling or drying device.
