PURPOSE: A washing machine is provided to alternatively rotate a spin basket or a water stream forming element for variously forming water stream according to washing conditions such as the kind and amount of clothing and reduce the damage of the clothing and the load of a motor, thereby increasing the washing efficiency. CONSTITUTION: A washing machine includes a casing(11) forming a receiving space inside, a tub(13) disposed in the casing for receiving washing water, a spin basket(15) rotatively mounted in the tub, a spin basket rotation shaft(17) formed of a hollow material to be rotatively connected to the spin basket at an end and extended downwardly along the longitudinal part of the casing and formed with a first outer tooth part at a lower part, a washing stream forming element(21) disposed in the spin basket to be rotatively with respect to the spin basket at an end, concentrically disposed in the spin basket rotation shaft at the other end for relative rotation, and formed with a second outer tooth part corresponding to the first outer tooth part, a clutch element(31) having inner tooth parts to be engageable with the first and second outer tooth parts to be coupled with the first and second outer tooth parts along an axial line of the spin basket rotation shaft and a slant contact part formed at a side part slantly with respect to the axial line of the spin basket rotation shaft, at least one clutch lifting lever element(41,43) having a slant surface corresponding to the slant contact part and rotating with respect to a rotation shaft disposed along the axial line of the spin basket rotation shaft for contact and separation between the slant surface and the slant contact part to lift the clutch element, a clutch lifting lever driving element for rotating the clutch lifting lever element, and a motor having a rotor integrally coupled with a water stream forming element rotation shaft(23) rotor rotatively.
