PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air conditioner for vehicle making the air distribution amount to a side vent air outlet preferable in a defroster mode and a foot mode. SOLUTION: In a structure provided with communication parts 19 and 19 which communicate with a side vent air outlet 11 at all times, air distribution amount from the communication parts 19 and 19 of the vent door 14 when fully closed, to the side vent air outlet 11 is throttled by a defroster door 13 serving as 'air throttle means'. Therefore, 1) in a foot mode, the air distribution amount to the side vent air outlet 11 from the communication part 19 (15% to 20% of the whole quantity of the air conditioned air) is secured as conventional, to provide heating sensation toward the whole body of an occupant. 2) Meanwhile, in a defroster mode, the air distribution amount to the side vent air outlet 11 from the communication parts 19 and 19 is throttled to the minimum (5 to 10% of the whole quantity of the air conditioned air), to thereby sufficiently secure the quantity of air blown out from the defroster air outlet 9. Thus, a least necessary heating sensation toward the occupant's upper half of the body is secured, while a window clearing performance of the vehicle frontal glass FW is put on top priority.
