PURPOSE: A coupler for sintering optical preforms produced by outside vapor deposition(OVD) is provided to enable automatic arrangement due to gravity, and to prevent the bending of preforms in a sintering process. CONSTITUTION: The coupler is characterized by comprising the parts of: a rotating rod(axis,10) having a rotating rod ball(12), on its end; a preform rod(20) having a preform rod ball(22), on its end; a hollow coupler(30), connecting the preform rod and the rotating rod, which has a rugby ball or cylinder shape, a ball-inlet formed vertically on the side of the coupler, and extrusions on its top and bottom for catching the ball. The gap between the rotating axis and the preform rod enables flexibility with the coupler, resulting in automatic arrangement to the direction of gravity of preforms. The coupler, the rotating rod, and the preform rod are made of quartz.
