PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a contour enhancement circuit for enhancing a contour while reducing noise. SOLUTION: A first high frequency detecting circuit 20a or a second high frequency detecting circuit 20b determines the spatial frequency of a raw picture signal, and a gain G is decided by a selector 20f in response to the spatial frequency. The gain G is decreased more as the spatial frequency of the raw picture signal becomes lower. A multiplier 20h gives the gain G to a contour enhancement signal which is generated by a contour detecting circuit 20g, and an adder 20j adds the raw picture signal to the contour enhancement signal with the given gain G.
