<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To carry out frequency processing so as to provide a certain visual effect irrespective of output resolution of an image. <P>SOLUTION: A sharpness processing means 3 converts the number of pixels of the image represented by image data S0 of a processing object so as to provide a desired output size in expected reference resolution, and luminance of reference resolution image data S1 provided by this is converted to provide luminance image data Y. Sharpness processing is applied to the luminance image data Y to provide sharpness-processed luminance image data Y1, and sharpness-processed image data S2 is provided from the sharpness-processed luminance image data Y1 and the reference resolution image data S1.
