PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simply accurately attach a date to photo images photographed in time series. SOLUTION: The image processing apparatus estimates a position of a date from low resolution image data obtained by applying preliminary scanning to a photo film by a film scanner 10, calculates lightness B and density variance G in a background part of the date by each image data and provides precedence of date recognition to each of the image data so that the higher precedence is provided to the image data as the lightness B and the density variance get smaller. The image processing apparatus applies processing of extracting the date information from the image data with high precedence and providing same date information to image data of a photo image inserted among photo images corresponding to image data having the same date information in time series until provision of date is finished to all the image data. A storage section 40 stores storage purpose high resolution image data S obtained by main scanning of the film scanner 10 and the date information D so that they are associated with each other.
