PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive shaft seal device of simple structure for reducing the pressure of a sealant in a communication passage between a fluid chamber and a first seal part, further reducing the pressure by a floating ring, and providing the pressure-proof first seal part to seal the high-pressure sealed fluid. SOLUTION: The shaft seal device comprises a fluid chamber 63 disposed between the first seal part 14 and a second seal part 15, a flow-in passage 20 which communicates with a communication passage 22 between the fluid chamber 63 and the first seal part 14 to allow the sealant S to flow therein, the floating ring 2 which is disposed in the fluid chamber 63 and has a pressure- reducing inner surface 3 to form a pressure-reducing space 7 between the fluid chamber and a rotary shaft 50, and a flow-out passage 67 which is communicated with the pressure-reducing space 7 to allow the pressure-reduced sealant S to circulate therein.
