Method for quality control of optical raw material and for optimizing sub-division of a raw material body into optical elements, whereby optical inhomegeneities within the body are detected and optical elements are cut from body sections that have as few as possible defects. According to the method a 3-D geometrical shape in a coordinate system is measured. Sampling radiation is then used to detect any inhomegeneities within the body and these are then superimposed on a 3-D body image. The invention also relates to an optical element obtained using the inventive method.
