PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a position at excavation by means of a shield machine to be inexpensively measured with high accuracy without using a gyrocompass, an electronic distance meter and the like. SOLUTION: In this position measuring method for measuring the position of the excavating shield machine, a stroke differenceΔS per very short time between shield jacks 9 and 9 is detected during the excavation; a relative angle changeΔθper a minute time of the shield machine 1 is determined according to the stroke differenceΔS and a distance K between the shield jacks 9 and 9; an advanceΔl per a minute time is detected by a jack stroke; and the angle changeΔθand the advanceΔl undergo time quadrature, so that an excavation locus of the shield machine 1 and the position thereof can be determined.
