PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten an axial length of an automatic transmission, in which a planetary gear type speed change mechanism is provided on one of two shafts and two systems of transmitting mechanisms transmitting power is provided between the speed change mechanism and other shaft. SOLUTION: A multi transmission with forward seven-speed is attained by means of two pairs of planetary gears 42 and 44, a pair of a first engaged gear 38, a pair of a second engaged gear 40, and four clutches C1 to C4, and two sets of brakes B1 and B2. Thus, the multi transmission is formed in a simple, lightweight, and compact design. Since the clutches C1 and C2 for connecting and disconnecting power transmission by the engaged gears 38 and 40 are arranged to overlap each other with a main speed change mechanism 36 on an input shaft 22 located on a side opposite to the main speed change mechanism 36, the length of the clutched are further shortened, and oil passages of the clutches C1 and C2, a supporting structure or the like are simply organized.
