PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To protect a chromatography bed and, at the same time, to improve efficiency of a column. SOLUTION: A chromatograph has the column 12 housing the chromatography bed 14 and a fluid to be separated by chromatography between its both ends 16a and 16b, so that the layer 48 of the fluid may be demarcated by the surface of the bed 14 and one end section 16a of the column 12; a piston 36 which slides in the column 12 and is composed of one of the end sections 16a and 16b of the column 12; and at least one first probe 45 and 46 which are attached to the end section 16a of the column 12 demarcating the fluid layer 48. The chromatograph also has a means 52 which adjusts the position of the piston 36 based on the surface of the bed 14 detected by means of the probes 45 and 46. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
