The invention relates to a starter device (1) for an internal combustion engine, comprising a switching control unit (7) for controlling a starter motor (2). At least one power switch component (4, 5) connects the starter motor (2) to a voltage source (6) and is activated via an assigned control line (16, 18). An electronic control system (15) is provided for controlling the power switch component(s) (4, 5). A release device (29 - 36) that detects the power train of the internal combustion engine provides a release signal for releasing the activation switching operation, in accordance with the operation of the internal combustion engine, by means of the control line or lines (16, 18). The release device (29 - 36) comprises a first release switching channel (22) that operates independently of the electronic control system (15) and a second release switching channel (26) that co-operates with the electronic control system (15). Said channels are designed in such a way that the activation switching operation is only initiated if the two release switching channels (22, 26) are simultaneously in the release position. A diagnostic device (40 - 45) of the switching control unit (7) detects the release switching position of the first release switching channel (22), once the release signal for the activation switching operation has been provided by the release device (29 - 36). This permits the monitoring of the function of the first release switching channel (22). |
