PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a coating composition free from a compound with anxiety about harmful properties to a human body. SOLUTION: The gas-barrier coating composition comprises (a) a polyvinyl alcoholic resin, and a cohydrolyzed product and/or cocondensed product of (b) at least one kind selected from the group consisting of a metal alcoholate represented by R<SP>1</SP><SB>m</SB>M(OR<SP>2</SP>)<SB>n</SB>(wherein, M is a metal atom selected from titanium, zirconium and aluminum; R<SP>1</SP>is the same or different and a 1-8C organic group; R<SP>2</SP>is the same or different and a 1-5C alkyl group, a 1-6C acyl group or a phenyl group; (m) and (n) are each an integer of≥0; and m+n is the valence of M), a hydrolyzate, condensate or chelate compound of the metal alcoholate, a hydrolyzate, condensate or metal acylate of the metal chelate compound, and a hydrolyzate or condensate of the metal acylate, with (c) a silane coupling agent.
