PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal head which generates no unevenness in printing images and prevents an image quality decrease even when an interval of heating elements of a coupling part becomes different from that of the other heating elements without executing highly accurate machining, and a control therefor. SOLUTION: In the thermal head in which a plurality of short thermal heads (A and B) each with a plurality of heating elements arranged in an array are coupled, a plurality of heating elements for overlap printing (heating elements 31<SB>1</SB>-31<SB>5</SB>and heating elements 32<SB>1</SB>-32<SB>5</SB>) are set at the coupling side of the respective short thermal heads to be coupled. One short thermal head to be coupled has heating elements (31<SB>1</SB>-31<SB>8</SB>and the like) of an equal interval, and the other short thermal head to be coupled has heating elements (32<SB>1</SB>-32<SB>5</SB>) for overlap printing which are arranged by an interval different from the interval of the heating elements of the one short thermal head.
