PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for advantageously decomposing an organic compound in the soil contaminated with an organic compound by making good use of a soil melting/solidifying process. SOLUTION: This method for decomposing the organic compound by making good use of the soil melting/solidifying process comprises a packing step to pack the soil contaminated with the organic compound in a movable heat- resistant vessel which is arranged on the ground and has an opening in the upper part, a heating/melting step to heat/melt the packed soil, decompose the organic compound and remove decomposed products as gaseous substances, and a cooling/withdrawing step to cool and transform the melted soil into a solidified glassy material and then withdraw the glassy material from the heat- resistant vessel.
