<p>An indirect calorimeter (10) for measuring the respiratory oxygen consumption per unit time of a subject includes a respiratory connector (12) to be supported in contact with a subject, to pass respiratory gasses as the subject breathes into the respiratory connector (12), and a bi-directional flow meter (14) having an ultrasonic flow transducer (18) that bi-directionally transmits and receives ultrasonic signals to the transducer (18) to generate a signal as a function of the volume of gasses passing through the flow meter (14). The indirect calorimeter (10) also includes a gas concentration sensor (26) to generate a signal as a function of an instantaneous carbon dioxide content of gasses passing by the gas concentration sensor (26).</p> |
