PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new automatic inspection device and a new automatic inspection method for measuring and evaluating automatically eccentricity in a contractedly formed part of a glass tube end part, and for allowing on-line product inspection in a production process. SOLUTION: A glass tube with both ends contractedly formed is held in an inspection position, it is rotated around an axis to acquire image information of the tube end part of the glass tube, the acquired image information about the tube end part of the glass tube is processed to detect position coordinates of a tube outside end in a contractedly formed portion of the glass tube end part, and position coordinates of the tube outside end in a main body portion, not contractedly formed, of the glass tube, an eccentric level is calculated based on the position coordinates of the tube outside end in the contractedly formed portion of the glass tube end part, and the position coordinates of the tube outside end in a main body portion of the glass tube detected by a glass tube outside end position coordinate detecting part, and the calculated eccentric level is compared with a prescribed specified value to determine the quality of the glass tube based on the eccentric level in the contractedly formed part.
