PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an optical device such as a liquid crystal projector having liquid crystal panel cooling structure of high efficiency. SOLUTION: Cooling fans 2 to 4 are respectively disposed at respective edge parts of an opening 26 provided at a flank of a cabinet 25 of an optical unit 1 containing a plurality of liquid crystal panels 19 to 21 for modulating light from a light source by making their exhaust ports 2A to 4A face to the liquid crystal panels 19 to 21 and blast ducts 5 to 7 are respectively attached to these exhaust ports. Cooling wind passes through blast ducts 5 to 7 and is introduced into the liquid crystal panels 19 to 21 without being intercepted by a dichroic prism 22 and is not unnecessarily diffused within the cabinet 25. Temperature sensors 8A to 8C are provided at downstream positions of the blast ducts 5 to 7 and rotational speed of cooling fans 2 to 4 are respectively controlled corresponding to temperature detected by the temperature sensors.
