PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer which can deal with a variety of sizes of sheet while ensuring a long printable region and its sheet carrying method. SOLUTION: The printer comprises a sheet carrying passage directed from a sheet table 13 through a sheet guide 13a to a sheet feed/discharge port 2, a print head 5 for printing on a sheet being carried in the downstream direction, carry rollers 3a, 3b, 10a, 10b which can be switched to hold or release the sheet, a stopper 12 disposed on the upstream side of the carry rollers 10a, 10b and advances retractably onto the sheet carrying passage, a sheet lower end sensor 11a disposed on the downstream side of the stopper 12 and detecting presence of the sheet, and a section 100 for controlling operation of the carry rollers 3a, 3b, 10a, 10b and displacement of the stopper 12 based on the output from the sheet lower end sensor 11a.
