The operating device uses an image detector (6), with a CCD or video camera, for monitoring the movement range of the sliding door or window panel (1a,1b). The detector is coupled via an evaluation device (7a) to a control circuit (7b) for the operating drive motor (5). The image detector may be positioned vertically above the path of movement of the door or window panel. The evaluation device uses a microprocessor to detect an obstacle in the path of the movement to provide a signal for the drive motor for reversing or halting the displacement of the sliding door or window panel.
