PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a focus state detector which can change the spectral distribution of subject light for detecting the focus state and subject light for videos according to need by making it possible to exchange spectroscopic means for separating the subject light for detecting the focus state from the subject light for videos. SOLUTION: A holder 26 is mounted with a plurality of spectral prisms 24A and 24D varying in spectral distribution and the spectral prisms to be used is changed over by rotating the holder 26. As a result, the spectral prism is changed over to the spectral prism of such spectral distribution as to increase the quantity of the subject light for videos when the image picked up by an imaging device for videos is dark and conversely the spectral prism is changed over to the spectral prism of such spectral distribution as to increase the quantity of the subject light for detecting the focus state when the subject light for detecting the focus state is insufficient, by which the conduction of photographing in an always optimum state and the detection of the focus state is made possible.
