PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a means in which measurement of molten steel level in a mold can surely be performed in good responsibility, even in case of drastically changing the molten steel temperature caused by the change of kind of the steel. SOLUTION: This means is provided with a plurality of mold temperature detecting means for detecting the mold temperatures over respective prescribed height ranges by fitting to the mold for continuous casting, a molten steel temperature detecting means for detecting the temperature of the molten steel poured into the mold for continuous casting, a first operating means for deciding the detecting temperature range in the respective mold temperature detecting means according to the output of the molten steel temperature detecting means and also, deciding a correlation between the mold temperature and the molten steel level, and a second operating means for calculating the height of the molten steel level in the mold for continuous casting based on the correlation between the mold temperature and the molten steel level decided with the mold temperature and the operating means.
