Surface treatment of installation components in lead-containing Cu alloy in order to decrease leaching out of lead due to the action of a fluid medium, especially water in a drinking water supply system, where the lead close to the surface is converted in a first step to Pb hydroxide or carbonate, desirably with oxygen addition, and treatment and removal of these by acid action in a second step. An independent claim is included for an installation component in lead-containing Cu alloy as described above.
