PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a digital camera capable of suppressing the deterioration of image quality without substantially increasing a data amount after compression and recording photographed source images. SOLUTION: In the case that the operation mode of the digital camera is set to a photographing mode, the kind of the set photographing mode is recognized (steps 100 and 102). Then, an optimum composition is set corresponding to the recognized photographing mode, an exposure photographing processing is performed, source image data indicating a photographed image are generated, and by positioning an area specifying frame corresponding to the recognized photographing mode, a low compression area in the image area of the source image data is automatically set (steps 104 and 106). Then, by using a JPEG2000 compression system, the source image data are compressed by compressibility set for each image area on the basis of the set position of the area specifying frame and they are recorded in a recording medium (steps 108 and 110).
