PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple and industrial method for producing esculetin expressed by formula (2) from a 7-alkoxy-6-hydroxycumarine expressed by formula (1) (wherein, R is an alkyl) in a high yield. SOLUTION: This method for producing the esculetin expressed by formula (2) is characterized by performing a reaction of the 7-alkoxy-6-hydroxycumarine expressed by formula (1) with a halogenated aluminum.
