PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a zoom optical system for focusing on an object at infinity to an close proximity, and following up quick zooming. SOLUTION: The zoom optical system is equipped with a variable power unit 2 varying power while moving during zooming, a 1st focusing unit 1 positioned in front of the unit 2, a 2nd focusing unit 3 positioned at the rear side of the unit 2, a sensor 4 detecting the position of the unit 1, and a memory 7 storing the movement information of the unit 3 during zooming in accordance with the position of the unit 1. The moving locus of the unit 3 during zooming is changed based on positional information on the unit 1 detected by the sensor 4 and the information from the memory 7. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
