PURPOSE: An apparatus for compensating gray scale of a video signal is provided to obtain a dynamic gamma value which is a compensation value according to an APL of video, and improve the contrast by improving the quality of picture. CONSTITUTION: A frame memory(501) receives a video signal from the outside for storing the same. An APL(Average Picture Value) operating unit(503) receives another video signal from the outside for operating an APL of the video signal. A histogram operating unit(502) receives another video signal from the outside for operating the video signal in a histogram. A selector(504) selects selectively operated video according to level signals of the operated video. A low level area extracting unit(505) extracts a low level area lower than a predetermined threshold preliminarily set from the selected video signal. A video processor(506) clarifies the extracted area.
