PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lubricant application device having a structure which can prevent an unclear image from being formed as a result of a reverse transfer and omission of a part of a transfer image through the first transfer step to the last transfer step for transferring images from image forming units in order. SOLUTION: The lubricant application device provided with a coating member 18 disposed so as to be brought into contact with a body 4 to be coated and separated from the coated body 4, an attached quantity detection sensor 19 which detects a quantity of substance attached to the body 4, and a control part 20 which sets an operation mode of the coating member 18 according to the result of the detection made by the attached quantity detection sensor 19, is characterized in that the control part detects a quantity of attached substance in an attached substance identification part provided on the coated body among the plurality of bodies which is in the previous stage, (n-1)th, is reversely transferred in the subsequent stage (n)th and according to the result of the detection, the control part controls the application of a lubricant with the coating member.
