PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sewing machine for buttoning where sewing is automated so as to sew a button and a webbing by scoop-sewing. SOLUTION: The sewing machine is provided with: a button holding mechanism for holding the button B; a cloth holding member 30 for holding an object W to be sewn while it is folded back by an end part 30a extended out backward below the button B to the vicinity of a vertical movement path of a sewing needle 15; a cloth movement mechanism relatively moving in a direction crossing the vertical movement path of the needle 15 with respect to the cloth holding member 30; and a looper forming a loop by catching a thread from the lowered needle 15. Then, the sewing machine vertically moves the needle 15 to the folded-back part of the object W to be sewn held by the cloth holding mechanism 30 to sew the button held by the button holding mechanism. The cloth holding mechanism 30 is provided with a webbing holding member 3 for holding the webbing C between itself and the distal end part 30a so as to fold the webbing C back through the end part 30a with the object W to be sewn with the webbing C positioned inside of the object W to be sewn.
