The device has a liquid crystal element (2), a diffusion element (3) underneath it, a LED (5) in the diffusion element for background illumination, a reflection element (7) at least partly enclosing the diffusion element and a circuit board (4) on which the LED is arranged. The diffusion element, which fills the space between the liquid crystal element and the circuit board, consists of a silicon-like transparent soft plastic.
