A tool for kneading metal bar into rounded profiles has a die section with a sloping feed to a rounding profile and with a grooved section to grip the bar and support it against axial forces. The grip pattern has at least two groove and ridge profiles lateral to the axial feed direction. The grooves are parallel and can be segmented. No other surface profiling is required for the die which is fitted into a rotating mounting to roll around the bar.
