Production of a piston (1) comprises producing a piston base (2) with attached piston hubs (7). A separate component (9) forming a piston shaft (6) is slid over the piston hubs and peripherally joined to an annular field (3) of the piston base below the annular field. An Independent claim is also included for a piston produced by the above method. Preferred Features: The separate component is joined to the annular field by welding or soldering. At least the piston base is made of a high-strength material, e.g. steel, and the piston shaft, especially its separate component, is made of a light metal, e.g. aluminum.
