The creeping phenomenon problem that conventional alkaline cells not using mercury involve is solved, and degradation of leakage resistance and capacity conservability are improved. An alkaline cell comprises a positive electrode can (1) and a negative electrode cap (3). The positive electrode can (1) contains a positive electrode mix (4) containing a positive electrode active material of silver oxide or manganese dioxide. The negative electrode cap (3) contains a negative electrode mix (6) containing a negative electrode active material of zinc or a zinc alloy powder and has an opening edge provided with a turn-back part (13b) and a turn-back bottom part (13a) along the peripheral face and having a U-shaped cross section and an inner surface made of copper (33). The positive electrode can (1) and the negative electrode cap (3) are sealed through a gasket (20). A separator (5) is provided between the positive electrode mix (4) and the negative electrode mix (6). An alkaline electrolyte is placed in this cell. In such an alkaline cell, a film (34) of a metal or alloy having a hydrogen overvoltage higher than that of copper is formed on the inner surface other than the turn-back part (13b) and turn-back bottom part (13a) of the negative electrode cap (3), and the end of the gasket (20) is in contact with the inner surface of the negative electrode cap (3). |
