The hand grip (1) to operate the lock for the boot lid, rear hatch etc. is fitted into a housing (2) mounted onto the vehicle. When not required the catch is retracted into the vehicle body via an opening. this holds the catch in a protected position while the vehicle is being driven. A servo motor moves the catch into the operating position when released by the driver. The catch has a circular shape and is moved about a central axis (5) by a servo drive arm (6) connected to the servo motor by a reduction gearing. The opening in the vehicle body is protected by a flexible seal (9) to prevent ingress of dirt. An alternate design has a linear drive to extend a hand grip catch out of the vehicle body, with a folding grip.
