PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an underslung elevator for inserting and tensioning a main rope for constituting a forcing-up type mechanism to a car in an edge part in a horizontal projection plane of the car. SOLUTION: A pulley 15 is pivoted on the lower side of the car 3 lifting in a hoistway 1, and is mutually separately arranged in the horizontal direction in the horizontal projection plane of the car 3. One end of the main rope 11 is engaged with the hoistway 1, and a winding forcing-up type roping is constituted in the pulley 15 from the lower side. Thus, the main rope 11 is invisible in a height corresponding place of the car 3, and the main rope 11 does not exist outside the horizontal projection plane of the car 3. Thus, the flexibility of arranging a hoistway 1 apparatus of the elevator is improved, and that of a layout is improved without requiring to narrow the floor area of the car 3 for arranging the hoistway 1 apparatus. The main rope 11 is invisible from a passenger to eliminate inconvenience of imparting a beautiful appearance when the main rope 11 is visible. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
