PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form a flat stitch of an elastic fabric such as knit fabric needing a relaxation amount of a looper thread and various flat stitches such as a flat stitch or a decorative stitch of woven fabric needing no relation amount of the looper thread by one sewing machine with a simple composition, to prevent empty chain drawing, and to continuously sew empty chain stitches in a stable state. SOLUTION: A throat plate pawl 136E for relaxing a multi-thread chain stitch formed below a throat plate 6 by entanglement of a needle thread and the looper thread in stitch forming of sewn fabric is provided on the throat plate 6. The throat plate 6 is provided with a thread setter 12 formed by locking pawls 12A and 12B respectively positioned on throat plate pawls 13E provided between needle location positions, provided in a groove 6F of the throat plate and having slant parts 12A' and 12B', and a detachable throat plate auxiliary pawl 11 for enlarging the relaxation amount with respect to the multi-thread chain stitch.
