An integrated circuit includes a plurality of modules which are controlled to be an active or a passive state by a respective enable signal. Substantially all the cells of each such module are provided with a leakage reduction circuit on the negative power side for disconnecting the cell from the negative power supply. Circuits are provided at the outputs of the module to fix the outputs at defined levels when the module is in the passive state, so that the passive module is logically isolated from other circuitry. The cells produced by conventional CMOS technology tend to have a certain amount of unused space on this negative side since pMOS transistors tend to be about twice the size of nMOS transistors, yet the overall cell is rectangular. Therefore, the present invention may make it possible to provide substantially all the leakage reduction with an accceptable cost in terms of module area.
