PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem that a lens actuator for a conventional optical pickup usually becomes sensitive to undesired characteristics such as elastic deformation mode resonance, and also to realize a smaller, thinner and lighter structure for the purpose of dealing with portable equipment or the like. SOLUTION: A square planar magnet is magnetized at both ends of one diagonal in the manner that the polarities are opposite to each other in the thickness direction to form a magnet plate 21. A back yoke 23 made of a magnetic material is closely stuck to one side of the plate to form a fixed magnetic circuit 25. Similarly, a fixed magnetic circuit 26 is formed in which a magnetic plate 22 and a back yoke 24 are closely stuck to each other. The two fixed magnetic circuits 25, 26 are fixed on the actuator base 11 with the magnetic faces opposed to each other. A coil assembly 47 in which long narrow solenoid coils 43, 44 are combined in a cross and a similar coil assembly 48 are stuck to two sides of a lens holder 42 holding an objective lens 41 to form a movable body 40.
