PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a plasma display panel of a surface discharge alternating current type, capable of improving light emission efficiency in each discharge cell by heightening the use efficiency of vacuum ultraviolet ray emitted from discharge gas. SOLUTION: In this plasma display panel, a front glass base plate 1 is provided with a plurality of row electrode couples (X, Y) formed by a pair of row electrodes X, Y opposite to each other through a discharge gap g, and a dielectric layer 12 for covering the row electrode couple. A back glass base plate 4 is provided with a plurality of column electrodes D respectively constituting a discharge cell C1 in discharge spaces in the parts intersecting with the row electrode couples (X, Y) and a fluorescent substance layer 7 formed in each discharge cell C1. A dielectric projection 12B projected into the discharge cell C1 is formed in a part of the dielectric layer 12 that faces to the discharge cell C1. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
