An arrangement for a magnetic stirrer has a drive unit (2) custom mounted below, and preferably connected to, the upper table surface (5) of the work top (1). The drive unit may be located in a recessed compartment (11) formed in the underside of the worktop. The compartment may have a hot-plate forming the upper closure, co-planar with the worktop surface.
