PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the image quality of a monochromatic image in a multicolor image forming apparatus of a tandem system by which an image quality in multicolor image formation requiring a delicate balance is stabilized and improved. SOLUTION: The multicolor image forming apparatus in which a transfer belt 7 is relatively separated from all photoreceptive drums excluding a photoreceptive drum 6B on a most upstream side in the feeding direction of a transfer material in a monochromatic image mode, is provided with a controlling means 13 to switch the width of the transfer electric field of a transfer means 4Bk provided at an image forming station on the most upstream side in the feeding direction of the transfer material in a multicolor image forming mode and the monochromatic image forming mode, and the controlling means 13 controls the width of the transfer electric field in the monochromatic image mode in a direction in which it is made larger than the width of the transfer electric field in the multicolor image forming mode.
